Pakistan is a developing country where human rights work is limited and the existing human rights
network is not so developed. There is a dire need of raising human rights issues in the country at
grass roots level, but the capacit6y of community based organizations and support NGOs to promote
human rights empowerment is weak, mainly due to lack of human rights awareness and basic organizational
skill. The need is to initiate activities with the emphasis on minorities’ rights, women’s rights,
culture of peace and tolerance, combating terrorism and other such issues by working together with the
international organizations and the government of Pakistan in a coordinated manner. In today’s Pakistan
the various shades of intolerance i.e. religious, ethnic, cultural caused in the recent past the latest
manifestation: political intolerance. The need is to create such an environment that could be a strong
and sustainable mechanism to resist and eliminate terrorism either in the name of religion or ethnicity.
Under the circumstances, it becomes imperative for human rights activists and such organizations to work
with great zeal and fervour to enhance the noble cause of human rights. With the same spirit the Human
Rights Council of Pakistan has been an active organization in protecting human rights and promoting culture
of peace and tolerance in Pakistan. Since its inception in 1992, the HRC has taken several steps for the
cause of human rights and democracy in Pakistan. The activities carried out by the HRC, have received wide range
coverage in all national media.
